The Latvian Finance Ministry has proposed amendments to the country's excise tax law to increase the duty payable on tobacco and alcohol.
Latvia currently has one of the lowest levels of excise duty in the Balkans. In addition to bringing the levels of duty more in line with its neighbours, the Finance Ministry was keen to point out the health and social benefits of raising these taxes.
Excise duty on tobacco and alcohol has been on a continuous upwards spiral in recent years in many European countries. The upward trend shows little sign of abating any time soon, as governments continue to face little opposition to increases made in the name of the common good.
The proposed changes are still subject to legislative review and final approval, and, should they be adopted, would become law prior to the end of the year.
