Latvia and Tajikistan signed five agreements, including an agreement for the avoidance of double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to income and capital taxes, during a visit by Tajik President Emomalii Rahmon to Riga on February 9.
The agreement will remove double taxation on investments, and promote increased trade.
Speaking at the forum Latvian President, Valdis Zatlers, commended Tajikistan on its commitment to increasing trade cooperation, noting that trade between the two countries had increased markedly, with Latvian exports to Tajikistan having increased from just USD10,000 in 2001 to USD3m in 2008. “For Latvia, Tajikistan is a very important and promising partner. As an EU member, Latvia wants to promote closer cooperation with Tajikistan and other countries in Central Asia,” he said.
“For Tajikistan, Latvia could become not only a trading partner, but also a strategic springboard for work in other European countries. [Tajikistan now has] the opportunity to use the experience of Latvian partners to join the economic and administrative environment of the European Union,” noted Zalters.
