The Latvian authorities have this week reiterated their determination to retain their national spelling of the single European currency, despite the official objections of the European Central Bank.
The 'eu' dipthong does not exist in Latvian, leading the euro to be referred to as the 'eiro' in that country.
However, the ECB has stated that the spelling contravenes a decision made by EU leaders in 1997 that the term 'euro' should be the same in all of the Union's official languages.
According to reports in the European media on the matter, the Latvian government is prepared to take the matter to the European Court of Justice if necessary, where it is likely to receive the support of fellow member state, Malta, which also favours a different spelling.
