A Labour Party Peer last week called for a discussion of the constitutional relationship that exists between the UK and the Cayman Islands and other UK-linked Caribbean jurisdictions, with a view to allowing more self-governance for the overseas territories.
"The time is now right for a meaningful dialogue, and for a rebalanced relationship, particularly in respect of the Cayman Islands,” commented Lord Davies of Coity, the Chairman of the Cayman Islands All Party Parliamentary Group at Westminster last Tuesday.
“Handled with care and goodwill, this can lead to improved constitutional advancement without damage to the relationship with the United Kingdom," he noted.
Lord Davies acknowledged that there is likely to be a growing call for full independence from the UK if there is not “measured progress” towards more democratic accountability.
“As different levels of internal self-government already exist among different territories, there is bound to be a feeling of some unfairness and a desire on the part of some territories to catch up," he observed.
A delegation of MPs and Peers is due to visit the Cayman Islands in July, led by Lord Davies.
