It emerged this week that following the government’s application in 2006 the Kyoto Protocol, which sets limits for the amount of greenhouse emissions that countries can produce, has been extended to Jersey.
Jersey ’s emissions will form part of the UK’s allowance so there is no specific target for the island. However, the Island's greenhouse gas emissions have fallen by 36% since 1990, meaning that it has performed better than the UK as a whole.
Chief Minister, Senator Frank Walker announced that:
“The extension of the Kyoto agreement to Jersey is welcome news."
He concluded:
"Jersey wants to play its part in combating climate change and we will go further than the 36% reduction on greenhouse gas emissions that we have already achieved with new measures that will shortly be announced when the Energy Policy consultation document is launched."
