Senator Jon Kyl (R-Ariz) announced this week that he will be making another attempt to push a bill imposing restrictions on online gambling through the Senate.
Although the bill was approved by the Senate Banking Committee last summer, it was not voted on by the full Senate.
Speaking to the Las Vegas Review Journal on Wednesday, Senator Kyl explained that:
"My plan is to try to get it up for a vote."
In a version of the bill passed by the House of Representatives in 2003, state-sanctioned sites offering wagers on horse and dog racing were exempted from the ban on online gambling.
However, the Department of Justice complained that allowing state authorities the right to legalize some forms of internet gambling could increase the amount of betting activity taking place, an objection which led to the introduction of Senator Kyl's stricter legislation in the upper house.
If the bill is passed, restrictions on internet gambling could become law by the end of the year. However, lawmakers are divided over the provisions banning state-sanctioned online gambling services.
