Speaking at a conference held in New York on Friday, the EU's Competition Commissioner, Neelie Kroes revealed that she intends to bring the European Union's antitrust policies more in line with those in place in the United States.
According to the Wall Street Journal, which reported on the meeting, Ms Kroes stated that the EC would not stand in the way of dominant companies merely because their competitors would be hurt, and that the standard would be whether consumers would be adversely affected.
"I like aggressive competition, including by dominant companies. I don't care if it may hurt competitors, as long as it ultimately benefits consumers."
Ms Kroes' stance on competition matters often represents something of a departure from that of her predecessor, Mario Monti, for example in the case of Microsoft, which has benefited from her more laid back approach.
