The South Korean government announced this week that it has launched a new scheme which will inform people that they have been indicted via text message.
The new initiative, which is expected to save the authorities in the region of 160 million won per year, was launched on Tuesday.
Explaining the reasoning behind the new service to Reuters on Monday, administrative official Leee Young-pyo observed that:
"Most people in South Korea have mobile phones and since the notices don't reach them immediately by regular mail, this is a more definite way for the individuals to know they have received a legal notice."
However, he went on to add that:
"People will receive a text message of a legal notice only after they apply for the service."
