Having received the objections of both sides to the initial proposals for an united Cyprus, UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan on Tuesday presented the Greek and Turkish Cypriot authorities with a revised draft of the plan.

However, hopes of a settlement being reached before the December 12 EU summit in Copenhagen are fast fading, as both camps have expressed grave concerns over crucial sections of the plan, which are unlikely to have been sufficiently reworked in the revised draft to satisfy.

Speaking to the EU Observer news service following the release of the new document, chief negotiator to the EU, George Vassiliou admitted that: 'I do not think that there will be a solution before Copenhagen, but at least there might be a basic agreement.'
