Following the failure of his appeal against fraud and tax evasion charges on Thursday, Russian tycoon, Mikhail Khodorkovsky has revealed that he will be making an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.
According to reports in the international media, after less than an hour of deliberations, Khodorkovsky's appeal against his conviction was rejected, although his sentence was reduced from nine years to eight.
Speaking to the BBC, a member of the former Yukos chief's legal team, Yuri Schmidt confirmed that:
"After the appeals hearing, which was nothing but a parody of justice...we would like to appeal to international public opinion to defend Khodorkovsky."
The appeal hearing was initially set to begin last Monday, but Mr Khodorkovsky's chief lawyer, Genrikh Padva was reportedly too ill to defend him, and the three other members of his legal team declined to step up to the plate.
Prosecutors accused the former Yukos boss of deliberately prolonging the proceedings in order to make a bid to stand for parliament, a move designed to embarrass the Kremlin.
