The commencement of Russian oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky's appeal against his conviction earlier this year for tax evasion and fraud has been delayed until Thursday, it has emerged.
The appeal hearing was initially set to begin on Monday, but Mr Khodorkovsky's chief lawyer, Genrikh Padva is reportedly too ill to defend him, and the three other members of his legal team have declined to step up to the plate.
Prosecutors have accused the former Yukos boss of deliberately prolonging the proceedings in order to make a bid to stand for parliament, a move designed to embarrass the Kremlin.
Although he is permitted under Russian law to stand for parliament whilst his appeal is pending, if it is thrown out of court, he will be unable to contest the seat in the forthcoming Moscow by-election.
The judge presiding over the case earlier this week ordered an adjournment until Thursday, stating that the court can then appoint a lawyer if Khodorkovsky's high-powered defence team is not ready to begin defending him by then.
