The President of Kazakhstan and his Finnish counterpart signed several documents including an agreement for the avoidance of double taxation on his official visit to Finland, which began on March 23, 2009.
At the meeting, the two officials signed a double tax avoidance agreement and fiscal evasion with respect to income taxes. The agreement will remove double taxation on investments, and promote increased trade. The two plenipotentiaries also signed a memorandum of understanding between the Kazakh Ministry of Education and Science and the Finnish Ministry of Education in the hopes of fostering intensified bilateral cooperation in this area.
The two ministers discussed areas of joint interest and investigated areas where cooperation could further be enhanced, particularly within political, economic and humanitarian spheres.
Speaking before the Kazakhstan delegation's departure, government spokesman Erzhan Ashikbayev said “This visit is paramount to improving Kazakh-Finnish relations – it is a further step in Kazakhstan's ‘Road to Europe’ program and will stand favourably when we discuss a new advanced partnership agreement with the European Union.”
