Jersey's Citizens Advice Bureau is the latest body to come out in support of the introduction of a PAYE system in order to bridge the States funding gap, according to a report in the Jersey Evening Post this week.
Speaking to the local newspaper on Monday, CAB manager, Francis Le Gresley revealed that the bureau has been in favour of introducing some form of pay-as-you-earn taxation for some time, as it believes that this will allow Jersey's taxpayers to organise their finances better, while at the same time providing an up-to-date and accurate picture of those finances for the States authorities.
He explained that under the current system, Jersey's taxation authorities are unable to respond to sudden changes in the financial circumstances of taxpayers, as all information held is based on past income.
Although there have been many suggestions made as to how to raise additional revenue in order to address the jurisdiction's budgetary woes, PAYE appears to be gaining the most support, and was endorsed earlier this month by the Jersey Taxation Society.
The introduction of this kind of taxation would bring casual workers in Jersey into the tax net, a factor which may explain its growing popularity among the Island's residents.
