Jersey Telecom Cuts Phone Charges

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

20 August 2001

Jersey Telecom has made a significant number of price cuts to popular European and international destinations. In some instances, costs of calls have been slashed by over 60% and there are plans to make further cuts to other destinations later in the year. Jersey Telecom mobile customers will also enjoy a reduction in their call charges which are made in line with the cuts made.

The high cost of telecommunication services was one of the main concerns cited by respondents to a survey carried out in March this year by Ernst and Young. The consultants asked 215 organisations in Jersey and neighbouring Guernsey to complete a written questionnaire relating to information security in the electronic economy. The three principal areas identified as needing improvement were the cost of telecoms services, broadband services and infrastructure, particularly links to the UK and Europe.

Jersey Telecom's list of price reductions is as follws:

Greece 16%
Italy 45%
Spain, Canary Island, Balearics 45%
Portugal, Madeira, Azores 39%
Norway 44%
India 15%
Australia, Cocos Islands, Christmas Islands 58%
South Africa 20%
Hong Kong 40%
New Zealand 52%
Singapore 40%
Japan 60%
Thailand 65%
United Emirates 63%

Bob Lawrence, Executive Director, said: "Whilst coming as a direct result of successful negotiations with our international partners, these big price cuts are also a reflection of our commitment to living up to our new brand values of customer focus and value.

"Destinations such as Australia, South Africa, Portugal and Madeira are all very popular places to call and with an overall average of 43% coming off charges, customers really will see a difference in their phone bill if they regularly phone overseas. Essentially it's all about offering value for money for businesses who need to keep in touch with the rest of the world, whilst our home customers can quite happily speak with friends and family overseas without worrying about what it costs."
