Jersey-based company Foreshore, an Internet hosting joint venture between the Jersey Electricity Company and Itex, is seeing an influx of customers, despite its multi-million pound data centre and Internet exchange not being scheduled for completion until late autumn.
According to Chris Evans, the managing director of Foreshore, firms have been attracted to the company because it offers the ability to host Internet businesses at its two sites in Sir Walter Releigh House and at Rue des Prés. Effectively what this means is that if one site should suffer a technical problem, like a power cut, the Internet business will not crash as it will run from the other centre.
The need for secure co-hosting sites is critical to the success of e-commerce businesses. One only has to look at the fortunes of US Internet auction firm Ebay, whose stock market capitalisation fell by US$1bn after its site went out of action for 21 hours.
Of Foreshore's surge in clients, Mr Evans commented: 'In the six months since we announced our plans, ten brand new customers who in the past had nothing to do with Jersey have come here to be hosted by Foreshore.' He said that because hosting requires firms to set up physical businesses on the island, this requires the services of trust companies and lawyers. He added that many of the Islands e-commerce businesses, such as PayOffshore and WorldPay, would be able to take advantage of co-hosting opportunities. Mr Evans said: 'Firms are coming here not just because of tax advantages but because of the secure environment Jersey offers and the range of skills the Island has.'
Another reason why firms might be attracted to Jersey is because it does not plan to introduce legislation to investigate Internet activities. Mr Evans said: 'This is a long-term project and we are spending a lot of money on something which is an undeveloped market. We see it as moving from being a niche business to something which is considerably bigger.'
