Jersey Finance Flags Up Annual Alternative Funds Debate

by Philip Morton, Investors Offshore.com

17 September 2008

The growing diversity of Jersey’s funds industry – and in particular the introduction of Unregulated Funds early this year – will be the topics explored at Jersey Finance’s Annual Alternative Funds Debate in London next month, Jersey Finance announced on Wednesday.

The event, which is entitled ‘Jersey – A Diverse Offshore Centre: Experts with Experience’, will be held on October 2 in London, and has been organised by Jersey Finance Limited, in association with the Jersey Funds Association.

Following a year of significant changes, the seminar will look at how the range of international service providers is expanding in Jersey. Speakers at the event will also discuss unregulated funds, which were officially introduced in early 2008.

Geoff Cook, chief executive of Jersey Finance, commented:

“Jersey has shown considerable resilience to the current global economic slowdown and is continuing to grow its funds resources. It is encouraging that, despite these conditions, the Island’s funds sector is still making progress and attracting new business – the latest figures show that 96 new funds were established in the first half of 2008. As well as looking at recent developments, this debate will also clarify opportunities that the current economic climate offers, particularly in the emerging markets.”

Jersey representatives on the platform will be joined by leading fund specialists from the UK at an event designed to encourage debate about the Funds Industry generally, and the role and advantages of jurisdictions such as Jersey.

As at June 2008, the total net asset value of funds under administration in Jersey stood at GBP244.2bn, with specialist funds accounting for just over half that total sum.
