The Jersey Evening Post reported last week that a local finance expert played a key role in the development of the first ever international anti-money laundering qualification.
The International Diploma for Money Laundering Reporting Officers, which was launched worldwide on Thursday, was developed by Jersey-based barrister, Stephen Platt in conjunction with the International Compliance Association (ICA).
'We have really had to go through hoops to move the project from conception to reality,' Mr Platt told the JEP following the Diploma's launch, explaining that: 'The qualification transcends national boundaries by focusing on best international anti-money laundering practice for financial services businesses.'
According to the newspaper, the professional qualification is accredited by a number of international professional bodies, and succesful completion of the course allows the finance professional membership of the ICA, with associated benefits which include resource support and ongoing professional development.
Speaking to the Jersey Evening Post on Thursday, ICA Course Director, Bill Howarth suggested that the development of a qualification such as this was long overdue, given the great need for enhanced regulation and compliance in the wake of the September 11 attacks.
'It is high time that a professional qualification leading to membership of a professional body was made available in order to encourage and maintain proper standards of anti-money laundering practice within the industry,' he observed.
