Jersey's Finance and Economics Committee received a rare message of support regarding its plans to impose a vehicle registration tax from consumer group, Concern this week.
Since the release of the new tax package, which additionally contains measures to tax benefits in kind, and to increase stamp duty on property transactions, F&E has come under fire from various quarters, including the tourism, agriculture, and car hire sectors.
However, according to a report from local news service, Jersey Insight, Concern believes that the one-off registration tax on new cars is a step in the right direction.
Speaking yesterday, spokesman for the consumer group, Craig Leach revealed that road congestion is the number one cause of complaint for tourists, and suggested that additional vehicle-related taxes, such as levies on company parking spaces, could be employed to further free-up the Island's roads.
Mr Leach campaigned in the 1999 elections on the platform that the subsidisation of motoring by the States authorities means that the number of cars present on the Island is increasing, and the standard of public transport services is deteriorating.
