The appointment of a new joint chief of the Immigration and Customs departments was announced in Jersey on Friday.
Steve Cole, who has been acting chief agent of the Customs and Excise Department since the departure of the previous incumbent, Tony Renouf, will assume the position soon, subject to approval by the States authorities.
Speaking to the Jersey Evening Post on Saturday, Mr Cole described his new position as an 'exciting challenge', and revealed that in his role as head of the Immigration and Customs departments, he will be primarily focusing on the eradication of financial crime in the Channel Island jurisdiction, and on clamping down on drug smuggling.
He added that monitoring possible increases in the number of asylum seekers coming to the Island will be a priority for the Immigration and Nationality department.
