Speaking last week, managing director of NTT Com Asia (the Chinese arm of Japanese telecoms firm, NTT Communications), Kenji Sakata suggested that the Hong Kong telecommunications market has been over-deregulated, and blamed Office of the Telecommunications Authority (Ofta) chief, Anthony Wong Sik-kei for this state of affairs.
According to a report from the South China Morning Post, the Japanese carrier does not agree with the Hong Kong telecoms regulator's decision to liberalise the fixed-line telephony business to allow unlimited players, believing that this has resulted in too much competition, and acts to discourage further investment in the sector.
'We find no incentive to apply for a licence because it requires a lot of investment in network,' the SCMP quoted Mr Sakata as observing. He continued:
'There is too much deregulation and too many licences. A 100 percent free entry into the [fixed line] market is not always right.'
