Japanese Government Mulling Wi-Fi Tax

by Mary Swire, for LawAndTax-News.com, Hong Kong

27 July 2004

According to reports in the national media, the Japanese government is considering the introduction of a tax on equipment relating to wireless internet access.

The Japan Times revealed last week that legislation putting forward a way of imposing levies on users of so-called Wi-Fi networks is expected to go before the country's parliament in 2005.

It is likely to be almost impossible to impose such a tax on existing users. In order to get around this, the Japanese authorities are said to be considering adding a license fee to the cost of new equipment.
