The Japanese government is to take part in the process to determine whether China has breached WTO rules following the complaint by the United States alleging tax discrimination in the Chinese semiconductor industry.
Speaking to reporters following a cabinet meeting, Japanese Trade Minister Shoichi Nakagawa explained that Japan “is also interested in the tax policy issue and has concerns.”
He added: “While discussing the matter with China, we want to take part in the case."
Under World Trade organization rules, third countries can declare that they have an interest in trade disputes and submit their own opinions on the issues at stake.
China is playing an increasingly large role in Japan's trading relationships, as evidenced by recent trade figures showing that Japan’s exports to China increased by 33% last year, whilst exports to the United States have suffered a 10% decline in the same period.
Some analysts have interpreted Japan’s move as a conciliatory gesture to keep its emerging trading neighbour on-side concerning trade issues, smoothing the path in future trade talks.
