Senior members of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP's) tax panel, the Tax System Research Commission, agreed this week to prepare a proposal for securities tax reforms within the next few weeks. The tax panel has been under pressure to reach an agreement on the tax reforms for some time now but its progress has been painfully slow.
The LDP will organise the bill for submission to the Diet at the special session next Thursday and says it hopes to see the new tax measures enforced in January. Newspaper reports from Japan have surmised that the decision on the tax reforms were expedited by the panel because last week's terrorist attacks on America had threatened to send the global economy into a spiral.
