Reports in the local media following Jack Straw's one day visit to Gibraltar have revealed that the UK Foreign Secretary received something of a rough ride on Friday, facing jeers and insults from a crowd of around 300 demonstrators.
The Panorama news service reported at the weekend that Mr Straw beat a retreat through the back door of the Governor's residence at the end of his visit to cries of 'traitor' and 'shame on you', having confirmed at a press conference that 'joint sovereignty has been discussed with Spain'.
Mr Straw admitted to reporters that difficulties had arisen between Spain and the United Kingdom over the Declaration of Principles under discussion, but according to Panorama, indicated that the Spanish desire for full sovereignty would never be agreed to by the British.
Speaking at a protest rally timed to coincide with the Foreign Secretary's visit, opposition leader Joe Bossano warned that: 'We cannot trust the Foreign Office to help us as I have been preaching for years,' and likened the Spanish government's actions to those of a terrorist organisation.
'The only way you deal with terrorists is not to negotiate with them, whether the terrorist is Bin Laden or Pique,' he told those attending the rally.
