The Israel Business Arena has reported on the remarks of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon during an annual meeting with the Editors' Committee to honour the UN decision in 1947 to authorise a Jewish State. Sharon said: 'We have no plans to raise taxes. I am making a clear, categorical commitment.'

He added: 'The emergency economic situation requires difficult and unpleasant measures. We are in great distress, that must be understood.'

Sharon also confirmed his pledge that the government will embark on a series of measures to guarantee Israel's status as a high-tech power and tourism infrastructures will also be strengthened.

Sharon further announced the government planned to "take more decisive steps to eliminate illegal foreign workers and Palestinians working in Israel without permits. We are setting up an immigration police, which will handle these problems swiftly. We will behave as other countries do in these matters.'
