The Isle of Man’s shipping register has been ranked third highest in the world by an international organisation which rates marine administrations.
According to the Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control (ParisMOU), only the United Kingdom and Sweden were placed ahead of the Isle of Man out of a list 79 nations.
Captain Desmond Howell, who heads the jurisdiction’s Marine Administration, was quoted by the Isle of Man Online as explaining that:
“We have always been in the business of dealing with quality ships and quality owners. We have always been fairly high and we put a lot of effort into making sure our ships are in good condition.”
“We have increased the number of visits we make to the ships and we now make mandatory inspections every two and a half years — it was five before — and that has made an impact,” he added.
