Irish Minister for Trade and Commerce Michael Ahern has revealed this week that software sales by Irish firms to the UK increased 15 per cent in 2002 over the previous year.

This equates to a total figure of £290 million, compared with £250 million in 2001, achieved in a somewhat unfavourable trading environment for the IT industry.

Commenting on the statistics, Mr Ahern explained that trade between the UK and Ireland now stood at an impressive £30 billion with the two countries doing more trade than ever before. The minister also lauded the Irish software industry further, revealing global exports valued at £1 billion annually.

"The ability of Irish industry to achieve high levels of export growth is based on a strategy, at both company and national levels, of accelerating investment in R&D in order to help create Irish companies that will be successful global companies. Ireland is committed to building a knowledge-led, innovation-driven economy with world-class technological capacities," observed Mr Ahern according to Online.ie.
