Irish Government Seeks To Cost Property Tax Relief Schemes

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

26 April 2004

According to reports in the Irish media last week, the government has no idea of the cost to the Exchequer of some 33 tax relief schemes, principally aimed at the wealthy and landowners.

The Dail Committee of Public Accounts was told by the Revenue Commission that from this year, Irish taxpayers who fill in self-assessment forms will be asked how many of 14 property-related tax breaks they have taken advantage of.

The tax incentives in question reportedly include relief for investment in multi-storey car parks, park and ride schemes, hotels, nursing homes, and certain private hospitals.

According to the Business World news service, Noel Faughnan, principal officer with the Revenue Commission's Operations, Policy and Evaluation division, revealed that a report on the uptake of tax incentive and exemption schemes by the Republic's wealthiest taxpayers is set to be released later this year.
