Irish Government Re-opens Union Discussions

by Robert Lee, Tax-News.com, London

05 March 2009

The Irish government will brief trade union and employer representatives on the deepening recession, marking the revival of discussions between the government and unions. Negotiations collapsed a month ago.

Government co-operation with unions is becoming evermore vital with Ireland’s large corporations announcing mass redundancies.

It is believed that the talks will focus on the April interim budget, which is expected to include several fiscal measures including the possibility of an income tax hike targetted at Ireland’s highest earners.

Despite protests by trade unions in mid-February against the recently introduced public sector pension levy, the government is unlikely to back down on the issue.
