According to reports in the national media last week, Ireland's Competition Authority will soon be appearing before the Public Accounts Committee to explain why since 1996 it has secured just seven convictions.
Speaking to the Irish Independent, chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, John Perry announced that:
"The committee will give the Competition Authority the benefit of the doubt. We will allow it to state its case and, if the committee is not happy with their plans, we will act accordingly."
He went on to add that "there are a lot of issues relating to competition in the public domain at the moment and it is important that the Competition Authority explain their effectiveness".
