Ireland's RTE Launches Online Business Service

by Amanda Banks, Tax-news.com, London

26 April 2001

The Irish media has reported that RTE has launched a new online business news service offering business news as it breaks between twelve hours a day, five days a week - including real-time stock market quotes for both British and Irish shares.

Although the service is now up and running, it is expected that the Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern, will officially open the new service at http://www.onbusiness.ie. The site is the result of a joint project between RTÉ News and RTÉ Commercial Enterprises. As well as the latest business and stock market news, the web site will offer DVD video and audio services including a regular slot of interviews with leaders of business and stock market analysts called Moneymakers. It will also post stock recommendations made by Irish brokers on the site and Irish Stock Exchange information is to be updated every 20 minutes.

Setting up the web site cost RTÉ just under I£100,000. Overheads for the actual operation of the service are expected to be kept low as it will have access to RTÉ's existing media and Internet resources. Revenue will be generated through advertising, offering e-mail services and selling content to other service providers.
