Ireland's Lawyers Urged To Amend Restrictive Entry Requirements

Ireland's Competition Authority is holding talks with the Republic's Law Society and Bar Council over 'anti-competitive' restrictions on entry to the profession, it emerged this week.

According to an Irish Independent report, the Authority is concerned that the only body which provides training for solicitors is the Law Society, whilst the Bar Council will only accept qualifications issued by the King's Inn for entry to the Bar.

The news service went on to reveal that although the Compeition Authority wants to reach a mutually agreeable compromise with regard to loosening the restrictions to entry of the legal profession, it is prepared to impose changes on the sector if a solution cannot be reached.

Speaking to the Irish Independent this week, a spokeswoman for the Bar Council confirmed that a meeting with the Competition Authority was due to take place, but dismissed suggestions that a mutually agreeable position was likely to be reached easily on the matter.
