Ireland's Labour Leader Favours Wealth Tax

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

25 February 2003

Speaking to TV3 News on Sunday, Irish Labour leader, Pat Rabitte announced his party's intention to oust Fianna Fail from government at the next elections by forming an alliance with Fine Gael.

Mr Rabitte also revealed that if the alliance between the two parties is successful, he would be in favour of imposing some form of wealth tax to help fund public services and infrastructure development.

'You can't rule it out in a country that now has significant wealth,' he explained, continuing: 'You can't rule out some modest rating that deals with wealth in some sense or another. You can't simply say we will impose what are still pretty hefty taxes on work and no taxes on wealth.'
