Ireland Urged To Capitalise On Hedge Fund Boom

The Irish Alternative Investment Forum held in Dublin last week heard how the booming global hedge fund industry represents a major opportunity for the Republic of Ireland’s fund administration industry.

Gerry Ryan, Chairman of conference co-organisers the Irish Association of Pension Funds, urged pension funds not be deterred by the recent downturn in performance in the hedge fund sector, noting a continuing need for new ways to maximise returns whilst losses are minimised.

“Trustees will need to continue to assess their investment strategies and may now wish to investigate investment products outside the mainstream categories to see if additional returns can be generated, always ensuring that any risks are minimised,” he observed.

Meanwhile, Aidan Tiernan, Partner with Ernst and Young observed in an RTE report: “Ireland is increasingly recognised as a centre of excellence for hedge fund administration.”

He added: “Hedge funds have become an integral part of the investment funds industry in Ireland and are set to contribute further to its ongoing growth.”
