Ireland, Switzerland, And Luxembourg Compete To Host New .eu Domain

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

20 September 2002

Ireland is to compete with Britain, Luxembourg, France, and Switzerland to host the new pan-European .eu domain name, according to a report in the Irish Independent on Thursday.

The newspaper revealed that the Irish consortium, which calls itself Eureto, wants to locate the technical support departments necessary to run the project in Letterkenny and Derry, and has predicted that a successful bid would create around 200 new database management and dispute resolution jobs in these areas.

Speaking with regard to Eureto's pitch to become the European Domain Name Registry, former Fianna Fail fund raiser and chairman of the board, Paul Kavanagh predicted that: 'From Ireland's point of view, it could be really beneficial to win this.'

Also involved in the Irish bid are former Tanaiste Dick Spring, former Foreign Affairs Minister, David Andrews, and former Irish Ambassador to the United States, Sean Donlon.

The deadline for submissions is October, according to the Independent, and a final decision will be made later this year.
