Irish Minister for the Environment, and leader of the Green Party, John Gormley, has ruled out rumours that the government would introduce a flat-rate tax on property ahead of a progressive system, thought to be under consideration for next year’s budget.
Speaking recently, Gormley was quoted by the Irish Times as saying:
“In the case of water and property taxation, I think it has to abide by a principle: that it should not be introduced on a flat-rate basis.”
“I know there are people out there who think this is the way to go, but once you do that you lose the argument,” he said, adding that “people are prepared to pay taxes if they are brought in on a fair basis.”
“In terms of a property tax, I don’t think people believe that a person who lives in a wealthy area should pay the same as someone living in a modest house. That is just not equitable. Therefore, I don’t believe it should proceed on that basis,” he said.
