Dublin’s city council is asking the government to raise additional revenues through the nation’s sales tax to cover a growing shortfall in the capital city’s budget.
According to reports, the extra cash woul be raised through a nationally agreed increase in Ireland’s VAT rate, with any extra funds raised from outside the Dublin area returned to local councils by the Revenue Commission.
The recommendation has been made by Dublin council’s head of finance, Kathy Quinn.
According to Quinn: “Over the past few years there has been an increase in the cost of the services the council must provide. This is particularly due to state and European legalisation in environmental protection.
“If the city is to meet these and other cost increases, new forms of funding must be found,” she added.
