25 March 2008

The first Scottish Government Minister to visit the Isle of Man at the direct invitation of the Manx Government was welcomed by Chief Minister Tony Brown MHK last week.

Linda Fabiani MSP – Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture – visited the Isle of Man last week to learn more about the Island’s constitutional position, political system, economy and culture.

Mr Brown commented of the visit:

"I was delighted to welcome Linda Fabiani to the Island as part of our continuing programme of building relations with other governments. It is important that our neighbours in the British Isles understand what the Isle of Man is all about, that we understand them, and that we can work together to our mutual benefit."

"Scotland is the closest country to the Isle of Man geographically, but we also have strong connections in terms of history and culture. Our two nations can learn a lot from each other," he concluded.

Ms Fabiani added that:

"Scotland has a special relationship with the Isle of Man and we share a Celtic culture including the Gaelic language. I feel very much at home here on this beautiful Island."

Ms Fabiani, whose responsibilities include the promotion of Scottish Gaelic, visited the Manx language primary school at St Johns during her visit.

She also toured the Legislative Buildings, attended sittings of the House of Keys and Legislative Council, and met with Manx Government Ministers and officers.
