The Isle of Man's Department of Home Affairs has reported that its application procedure for Internet gambling licences took longer than anticipated because the demand from both small and large casino operators has been enormous. And although checking procedures have now been completed on the applicants the Department says it is still receiving applications and expressions of interest in the licences from around the world.
According to the Department, the unprecedented demand is a result of the Government having put in place a strict regulatory regime which is attracting large casino operators in particular who have been searching for a safe and well regulated base from which to operate their proposed on-line casinos.
The Department has admitted that the extent of its checks on the prospective gambling operations has surprised some in the industry but it says it is determined to 'ensure that no stone is left unturned in ensuring any company granted a licence is whiter than white.' The checking procedure is thorough to say the least with police checks on individuals, data protection checks on companies, Customs checks on companies and individuals, checks on information supplied by individuals for references, identities, bank accounts held, and membership of professional bodies etc.
The Department has confirmed that it intends to seek the approval of Tynwald in October for an increase in the total number of licences available to twelve, providing a further nine licences for issue when suitable applicants are identified. An official announcement on the granting of the first three licences will be made at a press conference on the Island on 20 September, 2001.
