Internal Market Committee Passes Services Directive

by Ulrika Lomas, for LawAndTax-News.com, Brussels

25 November 2005

It emerged this week that the European Parliament's Internal Market Committee has approved the controversial services directive which played a role in France's rejection of the EU constitution.

In a delayed vote on Tuesday, the Committe passed the legislation in pretty much its original state, discarding the amendments proposed by German rapporteur, Evelyne Gebhardt.

The draft directive now faces a vote by the entire European Parliament in February 2006.

Speaking to the European media with regard to the legislation, Ms Gebhardt observed this week that:

"This proposal - as accepted by the committee - is definitely not overcoming fears about social dumping expressed by citizens in some countries."
