Leading US chipmaker Intel has announced plans to spend an additional $2 billion in expanding its manufacturing facilities in the Republic of Ireland.
The firm, which has previously revealed its intention to diversify out of California citing a difficult business environment, is planning to commence production at its new Irish plant, known as ‘Fab 24-2’ some time in 2006.
The investment has been coordinated in close liaison with the Irish Development Authority and will add another 60,000 square feet to the recently completed facility known as ‘Fab 24', described as one of the most advanced semiconductor plants in the world.
Intel has had a manufacturing presence in Ireland since 1989 and has invested a total of $6 billion in its operations in the country during that time.
