A public inquiry into the construction of another runway at the UK's Stansted Airport has been suspended for a second time as the government awaits the outcome of an anti-competition ruling.
The delay is expected to last at least nine months, marking the second time that a public enquiry into the runway's construction has been postponed.
Currently, Stansted's owners BAA are locked in a bitter battle with the Competition Commission over the airport's ownership, after the Commission ordered BAA to sell against its wishes.
According to the Communities and Local Government Minister, John Denham, the public enquiry cannot continue until the ownership altercation has been resolved. Expressing his views in an open letter released on June 17, Mr Denham explained:
“Given the airport operator’s decision, and taking into account the views put forward from a range of stakeholders, it is clear to me that it is neither feasible nor realistic to announce the start date for the Stansted G2 public inquiry until such time as the outcome of the appeal is known."
"While there is no set timetable for the appeal process, I understand that it might take around nine months to complete.”
