Inland Revenue Failing To Read Many Tax Returns

by Robert Lee, Tax-News.com, London

30 September 2003

According to a recent report in The Times, the Inland Revenue has been forced to apologise to many small businesses for launching needless investigations because officers have failed to read tax returns.

According to the report the Revenue has admitted that several investigations had been launched against businesses "without the officer having had sight of the paper return" apparently resulting from some offices having difficulties in storing tax returns.

John Baldwin, managing consultant at IRPC taxation services told the Times that in his opinion it was fairly obvious that some returns sent to the Revenue had not been read. "During an investigation, the Revenue would often ask for information already supplied," he commented.

An Inland Revenue spokesman revealed to the paper that new systems were to be put in place to ensure all tax returns are read before an investigation is launched.
