California-based search engine provider Inktomi, which already provides the search facility on the IRS's public web-site, has announced a further contract with the IRS to supply its Enterprise Search, an enterprise-wide information management solution.
"Inktomi offers a powerful information retrieval solution with a great deal of flexibility and control, providing the IRS with both the precision and adaptability it requires to manage large volumes of rapidly evolving content cost-effectively," said Tim Stevens, senior vice president and general manager, Enterprise Search Solutions at Inktomi.
In addition, the IRS said Inktomi's software lets them update content catalogues and indexes without disrupting the search and retrieval process as the changes are taking place.
The new IRS site went live in January 2002. On April 15 - Tax Day - the IRS.gov site received a record 78 million hits and the Inktomi solution processed 1.4 million search queries. The company helped retrieve a diverse collection of documents, including IRS procedures, filing requirements and detailed tax regulations for taxpayers to download or to file online.
