Industry bodies in Malta have called for Malta's telecommunications industry to be liberalised and opened up for competition under independent regulation. In a statement issued last week the Federation of Industry called the present situation in Malta's telecommunications sector 'a mess' and called on the Minister for Transport and Telecommunications to take the necessary decisions and action to liberalise Malta's telecommunications industry immediately.
Similar sentiments have also been expressed recently by the Chamber of Commerce which said that liberalisation of the telecommunications industry is 'fundamental for the progress of the country' after the recent decision to refuse to allow Vodafone to decrease its mobile rates by 25%.
With Malta about to enter into accession talks with the EU it is likely that reform of the telecommunications sector will be high on the Government's agenda soon in order to meet the EU's 2003 deadline for harmonisation.
