Mochamad Tjiptardjo, the previous director of intelligence and investigation at the Indonesian Finance Ministry's Directorate General of Taxation, has been chosen as the new director-general of taxation.
He replaces Darmin Nasution, who has been appointed as the senior deputy governor at the central bank, Bank Indonesia. Nasution is said to have been successful in driving through reforms in the tax office, broadening the tax base and increasing revenues.
Nasution's replacement, Mochamad Tjiptardjo, is a career tax official. He is expected to continue Nasution's work and further boost compliance levels. Tjiptardjo played a significant part in the high profile investigation of PT Asian Agri.
Due to the global economic recession, tax revenues in Indonesia have fallen behind budgetary targets in the first half of this year.
