02 November 2001

India's Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha has said this week that the government will give tax reforms top priority and they will be geared towards individuals and industries.

'Tax reform is uppermost in my mind. We have prepared a road-map and we will continue to follow it. Any changes in the tax system will not be at your disadvantage. In fact, it will be advantageous to the trade and industry and people,' said Sinha during an insurance summit organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

He said that reforms will be implemented across the States which will introduce tax refoms at their own levels. 'We are not at all ashamed of the track record of AB Vajpayee's government in the last three and half years, as far as reforms are concerned. But, we want to move ahead speedily and we are moving ahead speedily with the reforms. There is no dampened effect on the government,' the Finance Minister added.
