Officials in India have showed their appreciation for the success of the India-based film Slumdog Millionaire, which recently took eight Oscar awards, by granting the film a waiver from entertainment tax for its contribution to boosting tourism.

The film, set in Mumbai, has had a profound effect on the city’s tourism levels, which have increased by 25% since the launch of the film. One Chief Minister applauded the film, which has now broken national records, stating: “This film has earned a special distinction by claiming eight Oscar awards in different categories and hence created history in the field of Indian cinema.”

In recognition of the film's achievements, Chief Ministers from several Indian states have granted tax exemptions on entertainment tax for a year, in order to further reward those involved in the film and encourage the widespread distribution of the film.

Chief Minister of Assam, Tarum Gogoi, said in a statement: “The entire nation is proud of the award-winning team and the government has responded to it by exempting tax to enable more and more people to watch [the movie].”

Among Oscar awards for music composition, sound mixing, and editing awards Danny Boyle, the film's Director, won the prestigious best picture and best director award.
