Indian Government Exempts Hotels From Service Tax In Bid To Boost Tourism

The Indian Government has announced that in a bid to rescue the country's ailing tourist industry, it has exempted hotels from service tax.

Currently, the hotel industry attracts a 5% service tax on the billed amount, with a 40% rebate on offer if catering is involved. However, following the introduction of the new rules, 100% rebates on all services involving catering in hotels will be available.

In an official release earlier this week, the government explained that the move had come as a result of a proposal from the Tourism Ministry, which has several other campaigns designed to boost the sector, and has been approved by the Finance Ministry.
