The Indian Finance Ministry has revealed that the Directorate of Service Tax is to be the first of the country's tax departments to provide an online interface, offering facilities for electronic registration, tax payment, filing, and assessment.
According to Finance Ministry sources, the system will go live in Mumbai shortly, and will be extended across the whole country over a two to three year period. 'As soon as a centre becomes capable of handling the web-based service tax regime, it will be extended there too,' a Finance Ministry official revealed earlier this week.
The extension process is intended to run alongside the computerisation of the Excise Department, and it is hoped that the system will serve as a model for the country's other tax administrations, leading eventually to a fully integrated online tax facility.
